  • Israel is using AI to flag high-risk covid-19 patients

    27 Apr, 2020
One of Israel’s largest health maintenance organizations is using artificial intelligence to help identify which of the 2.4 million people it covers are most at risk of severe covid-19 complications. Maccabi Healthcare Services says the system—which it developed with AI company Medial EarlySign—has already flagged 2% of its members, amounting to around 40,000 people. Once identified, individuals are put on a fast track for testing.
The AI was adapted from an existing system ...
  • Doctors are using AI to triage covid-19 patients

    24 Apr, 2020
Faced with staff shortages and overwhelming patient loads, a growing number of hospitals are turning to automated tools to help them manage the pandemic.

Rizwan Malik had always had an interest in AI. As the lead radiologist at the Royal Bolton Hospital, run by the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), he saw its potential to make his job easier. In his hospital, patients often had to wait six hours or more for a specialist to look at their x-rays. If an emergency room doctor could get a...
  • Australia's coronavirus contact tracing app: what we know so far

    23 Apr, 2020

Scott Morrison says consent will be key, indicating the app won’t be mandatory, but it could play a part in easing Covid-19 restrictions.

The Australian government is planning to launch an app in a matter of weeks that will trace every person who has been in contact with a mobile phone owner who has tested positive for coronavirus in the previous few weeks, in a bid to automate coronavirus contact tracing, and allow the easing of restrictions. Here’s what we know abo...
  • NIH-funded MD2K Center releases app that alerts user if close contact with COVID-19 cases

    22 Apr, 2020
Free mContain app for Greater Memphis area also provides crowding alerts for physical distancing. Researchers at the University of Memphis-based Center of Excellence for Mobile Sensor Data-to-Knowledge (MD2K) have introduced a new mobile app that may support physical distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic. MD2K is supported by NIH with a grant administered by the National Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB).

  • Corti: Fighting COVID-19 with A.I.

    22 Apr, 2020
Who are Corti?Corti.ai is a European company based in Copenhagen, Denmark, that develops state-of-the-art artificial intelligence software. Their software seeks to analyze patient health, and help support healthcare personnel when triaging patients, in order to reduce over- and under-triaging.
Curbing transmission with A.I.They have built an artificial intelligence that is capable of analyzing patient interviews in text, video, or audio formats, and detecting whether there is a high risk o...
  • Machine learning could check if you’re social distancing properly at work

    21 Apr, 2020
Andrew Ng’s startup Landing AI has created a new workplace monitoring tool that issues an alert when anyone is less than the desired distance from a colleague.

On Thursday, the startup released a blog post with a new demo video showing off a new social distancing detector. On the left is a feed of people walking around on the street. On the right, a bird’s-eye diagram represents each one as a dot and turns them bright red when they move too close to someone else. The company ...
  • COVID-19 Vaccine Developers Gain Enhanced Access to Supercomputers

    21 Apr, 2020
Federal agencies, academic institutions, and industrial partners are joining forces to combat COVID-19 using artificial intelligence.
arlier this week, the White House announced the creation of the COVID-19 High Performance Copmuting Consortium, a coalition of federal agencies, academic institutions, and partners in industry to provide researchers working on vaccine development access to supercomputers, with an aim to expedite the end of the current pandemic.

    There are currentl...
  • Quantifying SARS-CoV-2 transmission suggests epidemic control with digital contact tracing

    21 Apr, 2020
The newly emergent human virus SARS-CoV-2 is resulting in high fatality rates and incapacitated health systems. Preventing further transmission is a priority. We analyzed key parameters of epidemic spread to estimate the contribution of different transmission routes and determine requirements for case isolation and contact-tracing needed to stop the epidemic. We conclude that viral spread is too fast to be contained by manual contact tracing, but could be controlled if this process was faster...
  • Digital contact tracing can slow or even stop coronavirus transmission and ease us out of lockdown

    21 Apr, 2020
A team at Oxford University is sharing an epidemiological model to help configure a contact tracing app for coronavirus. The model offers several safe configurations to introduce an app and a framework to optimise the app after it is released. The simulations confirm that if around half the total population use the app, alongside other interventions, it has the potential to stop the epidemic and help to keep countries out of lockdown. These research efforts are supporting several European proj...
  • Fighting COVID-19 with Data and AI: A Review of Active Research Groups and Datasets

    20 Apr, 2020

    AI-Based Systems Detecting COVID-19

    1. DAMO Academy (Alibaba Group) Detects Coronavirus Cases in CT ScansIn early February, Alibaba Research Academy (DAMO Academy) came up with an AI-based solution that can detect COVID-19 in under 20 seconds with 96% accuracy. The network is a deep computer vision model which takes the CT scan of a patient as input and outputs whether or not they show signs of coronavirus. The model was fine-tuned with more than 5,000 training samples and ...
  • The COVID-19 Host Genetics Initiative

    19 Apr, 2020
MissionThe COVID-19 host genetics initiative brings together the human genetics community to generate, share and analyze data to learn the genetic determinants of COVID-19 susceptibility, severity and outcomes. Such discoveries could help to generate hypotheses for drug repurposing, identify individuals at unusually high or low risk, and contribute to global knowledge of the biology of SARS-CoV-2 infection and disease.
    Objectives
The COVID-19 host genetics initiative is a bottom-up coll...
  • Instagram founders launch COVID-19 spread tracker Rt.live

    19 Apr, 2020

Instagram  founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger have teamed up to launch their first product together since leaving the Facebook mothership. Rt.live is an up-to-date tracker of how fast COVID-19 is spreading in each state.

“Rt” measures the average number of people who become infected by an infectious person. The higher above the number 1, the faster COVID-19 races through a population, while a number below one shows the virus ...
